Carl, who said he was not part of the Occupy crowd, was disappointed that the week's protests weren't more focused on NATO.
"Everybody has their own message, (and) it isn't super-effective when you want to get a singular message across," said Carl, who said he came out specifically to protest U.S. and NATO actions in Yemen and Pakistan, where he has friends and family.
In the days leading up to the two-day summit, nurses rallied in a downtown plaza to call for a "Robin Hood" tax on banks' financial transactions. The next day, groups marched to Mayor Rahm Emanuel's house to protest the closure of six community mental health clinics.
At other times, noisy protesters snaked aimlessly through downtown streets, evading and taunting police. One activist even abandoned a march that began as an environmental protest because it had been "hijacked" by a raucous group with no focus.
Then on Sunday, they all came together for the largest effort ? a march against the NATO summit that was peaceful until the end, when some protesters clashed with police for a couple of hours, throwing boards and bottles. Some officers struck back with batons.

And now that they've met face-to-face, "it is really going to strengthen the movement and lead to more cohesive national days of action and better organizing in general at the national level," she said.
Jesus Palafox, a Chicago activist with the American Friends Service Committee, said the fact that so many groups came together energized many movements, including the quest to preserve union rights.
Many city and school contracts are expiring soon, raising the possibility of strikes, he said, and the Chicago meetings will "be a jumping-off point" for union protests.
And anti-war activists, who worked hard to drum up support for the NATO march by linking U.S. war spending to economic cuts at home, said they were successful, too.

Marching along with protesters to Boeing, Kevin Murphy said he had been disappointed with what he called a small and "very disorganized" movement. He doubted it would change the minds of any of the world leaders at the summit.
The farmer from Beaver Dam, Wis., said he came to Sunday's march to protest the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and decided to stay for the march to Boeing.
Some protesters, particularly those who threw objects at police, were too young to know "what they are talking about," he said. "Instead of doing this, they should just vote."
Estimates for Sunday's march varied widely ? police said about 2,200 participated. Organizers said 15,000. But either way, the number was far less than the 500,000 who marched through the streets of Chicago in 2006 to call for immigration reform or the tens of thousands organizers predicted would march when both the G-8 and NATO summits were to be held here.
Joe Lombardo, a New Yorker who belongs to the United National Anti-War Coalition, said the turnout and diverse views in Chicago do not signal that any one movement is floundering.
"We have a diverse message because we're under great attack," he said. "We all have grievances and ... we're merging into one huge movement for social change."

Wiz Khalifa paid tribute to late Beastie Boy Adam "MCA" Yauch, who passed away earlier this month after battling cancer, while Cee Lo Green joined his hip hop band Goodie Mob to perform "Fight For Your Right" in Yauch's memory.
The biggest tribute of the night was for Whitney Houston, who died suddenly aged 48 in February this year. The late singer was posthumously given the Millennium award, while singers John Legend and Jordin Sparks led heartfelt renditions of "The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You" against a backdrop of photographs of Houston.
Houston's sister-in-law Patricia Houston and teenage daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown accepted the award, with the late singer's emotional daughter saying "I'm just blessed to have been in such an incredible woman's life, there will never be another one ever."

Meyer sued Belk for trade dress infringement and unfair/deceptive trade practices in the high-end cookware market.? After a 9-day trial, the jury found in Meyer?s favor, including a finding that Belk sold cookware that was ?deceptively similar? to Meyer?s knowing of Meyer?s designs as well as a finding that Belk caused Meyer damage.? The court trebled the $420,000 in damages found by the jury to $1,260,000 under North Carolina law.? Belk appealed. The court found that Belk had waived a number of its arguments, including the sufficiency of the evidence of infringement along with challenges to jury instructions.? (For what it?s worth, the designs look a lot alike to me, but they also look like nice pots and pans.)? In addition, Belk?s challenge to Meyer?s expert was properly rejected.? He?d testified as an expert witness in consumer behavior and marketing in a number of cases, and had analyzed and designed consumer research studies in a variety of settings.? Even though he hadn?t previously conducted trade dress or trademark surveys specifically, he could qualify as an expert.? Cross-examination addressed some of Belk?s concerns; he testified that he?d prepared to address trade dress and infringement issues by consulting ?academic and professional sources? and ?attorneys and legal practices who practice trade dress/trademark law.?? The court of appeals didn?t consider it dispositive that he failed to consult any survey questionnaires that had been offered and accepted in court in trade dress litigation.? Belk argued that his secondary meaning/likely confusion survey excluded relevant consumers, had an inadequate sample size, was not geographically representative, had leading questions and wrongly used side-by-side exposure.? But this wasn?t the rare case when a survey was so flawed as to be inadmissible; these objections were properly addressed by the trier of fact. Belk then argued that the district court wrongly sent the state-law UDTPA claims to the jury.? North Carolina?s UDTPA requires conduct that was unfair or had the capacity/tendency to deceive and that proximately causes actual injury.? Whether the conduct was unfair or deceptive is a legal issue, and ?a somewhat nebulous concept, ? but only practices involving ?some type of egregious or aggravating circumstances are sufficient to violate the UDTPA? (citation omitted).? Generally, trade practices can only be unfair when they offend established public policy and are ?immoral, unethical, oppressive, unscrupulous, or substantially injurious to consumers.? ??An act need not be both unfair and deceptive to be covered.? The actor?s intent or good faith is irrelevant.? Treble damages are assessed automatically.? The statute doesn?t provide the measure of damages, but North Carolina courts have explained that the measure should further the purpose of damages awards, which is to put the victim back in its original condition.? The 4th Circuit had previously held that disgorgement of profits could be trebled under state law (in a case where the plaintiff didn?t provide notice of its registration and defendant had no actual knowledge of it and thus where 15 U.S.C. ? 1111 precluded Lanham Act damages for infringement of a registered mark). The court of appeals found that, given the jury?s factual findings, Belk engaged in unfair and deceptive trade practices as a matter of law.? Belk sold a cookware line that was deceptively similar to Anolon Advanced; it did so after receiving product, sales, and market information, along with images and samples of Anolon Advanced; and it bought the deceptively similar designs from a third party even after learning that Meyer was selling the third party?s proposed designs.? This ?possesses the tendency or capacity to mislead or creates the likelihood of deception? sufficiently to trigger the law. Belk argued that the legislature didn?t intend the law to cover ?unintentional? unregistered trademark infringement claims already addressed by the Lanham Act.? An earlier district court case had so held, reasoning that the law was designed to protect consumers, not mark owners, and that, given that the penalty for infringement of registered marks was $200-$1000 plus actual profits or damages, the legislature wouldn?t have intended mandatory treble damages for innocent infringement of unregistered marks. The court of appeals disagreed.? Intent is irrelevant, and state and federal claims are often brought together.? Moreover, the N.C. legislature later amended the law to make infringement of a registered trademark a per se violation of the law and thus subject to treble damages.? In addition, the evidence didn?t support Belk?s claim of innocent or unintentional infringement.? Sadly but unsurprisingly (perhaps based on the welter of arguments that weren?t preserved for appeal), the court said that ?the inference of an intent to deceive could hardly be stronger on this record,? without considering whether a reasonable seller could have thought that the design of the product was freely copyable, whether because of functionality or lack of secondary meaning. Finally, the court of appeals held that the award of profits was properly treated as a damage award subject to trebling.? Belk?s profits constituted a proper rough measure of damages.

"All I've heard is that it's very scandalous, to say the least," the "Vampire Diaries" star told MTV News. "I haven't read it, but who knows? I mean, well, I guess we'll have to see."
Fans of the erotic trilogy might not mind seeing Dobrev get her S&M on with her "Diaries" co-star Ian Somerhalder in the big-screen adaptation of the E L James book. But she confessed that if she does play the part, she wouldn't want to have Somerhalder playing the millionaire beau, Christian Grey.
"I don't know if that's a good idea," she said. "I think it's best for any of the actors on the 'Vampire Diaries' to kind of do their own things ... and create new characters. And as much as you try when you shoot a movie, if it's two of the same people, the fans will always see you as ... they'll see me as Elena and they'll see him as Damon if we do a film together."
So, that means "Fifty" fans will only get either Dobrev or Somerhalder if either gets cast in the film. And Dobrev is most certainly rooting for him. "I think it would be better [if] either he should get it or I should get it," she said. "I know that apparently he's really great for the role, so I hope that he gets it."
Given how sexy the book is, casting might not be the only challenge. Some fans are wondering how they can adapt the highly charged sex scenes for an R-rated version of the film.
"Making this movie will absolutely be a challenge. It is going to take a devoted director who admittedly likes the books and understands that, first and foremost, this is a love story," Lisa Parker from FiftyShadesFilm.com told MTV News. "If telling the love story is the main focus, then we do believe the steamy sex scenes can be shot and edited in a way to get us an R-rated movie rather than NC-17 ... There was a bright spot: openly gay state Rep. Marcus Brandon, North Carolina?s only openly gay legislator, overwhelmingly (66.15% to 33.85% or 4, 909 votes to 2,512) won re-election against a primary challenge from the Democrat he defeated in 2010.
Meanwhile, in Colorado, however, Republicans in that state legislature ran out the clock on passing legislation granting civil unions.
But unlike the rage over Prop 8 in California, folks in North Carolina have taken to the streets in a new WE DO campaign to request marriage licenses. From Rev. They will be joined by hundreds of family members, friends, clergy, and elected officials who will stand with them in support. In select towns, trained volunteers will conduct peaceful sit-ins after the denials of marriage licenses occur, as a form of civil disobedience. At every turn, we will express love and empathy towards those who oppose LGBT rights and those whose job it is to enforce unjust laws.
But there?s another, more urgent reason why we?re starting these actions on May 9. We want to send a clear, simple message to LGBT youth across our state, especially those who, for months now, have been hearing increasingly vitriolic messages condemning them. We want them to know that there are people all across our state ? and all across our country ? who are ready to stand up for their full equality. Tonight?s results were disappointing, not just for gay and lesbian North Carolinians, but for the hundreds of thousands of non-traditional families who may face the harmful impact of Amendment One. Our campaign may have fallen short this evening, but your work over the past several months did not. Your efforts and dedications achieved many victories along the way, and demonstrated to North Carolina and to the entire country that discrimination and victimization will not achieve easy victories.
Tonight?s result was truly historic. This amendment began with a forty-point lead just a few months ago ? but you, undeterred and undaunted, worked to educate your fellow citizens about its harms. Your work has made a difference not just in North Carolina but in our country as a whole. People from all over the country can now look to North Carolina as an example of a state that fights to protect, defend, and support all of its citizens.
Our campaign was a rejection of the divisive vision offered by the National Organization for Marriage and similar organizations who advocated for this damaging amendment. Just as they have done in many other states, these organizations injected millions of dollars of funding into a messaging campaign that framed the Amendment as a fight to protect ?family,? never admitting that it stood to endanger families, children, and individuals across our state.
Over the course of the campaign we showed them that North Carolina was better than this amendment, and better than their divisive tactics and misleading messages. We may lost in the polls tonight, but in the final days of this campaign we succeeded in reframing this debate, replacing divisive messaging and scare tactics with pragmatic discussion and empathy.
We would like to thank you and everyone who fought against Amendment One. Over the course of the campaign we were inspired by the tens of thousands of people we met at events, encouraged by the thousands of volunteers who stepped up and spoke out, and awed by the 11,000 people who contributed financially to our success.
All of our efforts were boosted by a historic coalition that came together across North Carolina, and our spirits were lifted by our diverse and courageous allies. Our partners include Equality North Carolina, HRC, the NC NAACP, ALCU-NC, Blueprint NC, Replacements, Ltd., Southerners on New Ground, and dozens of faith communities and community organizations.?

?As momentum for the freedom to marry continues to grow in the rest of the nation, today?s vote is a painful reminder of what happens when a preemptive ballot-measure is stampeded through before people have had enough time to take in real conversations about who gay families are and why marriage matters to them.? This amendment is a last gasp of discrimination that will cause real harm to families, communities, and businesses in North Carolina, but says little about the prospects for a better outcome in battles to come in states where there has been greater visibility for loving and committed couples and those who get to know them.?? Tonight North Carolina?s discriminatory and overreaching Amendment One passed, banning marriage and other forms of relationship recognition for gays and lesbians.? The Human Rights Campaign, the nation?s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, expressed disappointment in the vote, but characterized it as a temporary setback in the fight for equality.
?The passage of Amendment One is a heartbreaking loss for families in North Carolina, but will not stop us in the march toward full equality,? said HRC President Joe Solmonese.? ?As the country continues to move in the direction of marriage equality, our opponents have cynically interrupted the important conversations taking place which lead to increased understanding and acceptance.?
Support for these constitutional amendments has been dropping over the years as support for marriage equality continues to rise nationwide.? In 2004 similar amendments passed on average 71 percent to 29 percent.? In 2008, the margin shrank from 57 percent to 43 percent.? Prior to the vote, the May 1 PPP poll showed voters under age 30 opposed the amendment by 26 points and in addition, reports indicate that youth turnout was significantly high during the early voting period.? Tellingly, NC House Speaker Thom Tillis also recently said the issue was generational and that the amendment would be repealed in 20 years.

For those clinging to that notion in order to hide their own homophobia it has become challenging to defend their decision to vote for the Amendment. Not for those who see no separation of church and state, mind you, but those who are fuzzy on what they choose to believe in the Bible when it suits their needs. But we won?t forget the support and love from many on the ground here and in digital space around the country.
The majority of North Carolinians voting today don?t believe that my civil marriage (legal depending on what state we travel to), should be recognized.? While perhaps some subset probably didn?t know they were banning civil unions and domestic partnerships (at this point, one has to believe these folks are pretty dense), the most vocal proponents of Amendment One not only wanted to ?protect marriage,? they wanted to punish lesbian and gay couples. Apparently even at the expense of economic development and jobs or collateral harms to unmarried opposite couples and children, or what will now be legal chaos over all of these harms and the possible impact on private contracts as well.
