Islamist Morsi wins Egyptian presidency, urges unity

Egypt's Mohamed Morsi became the first Islamist to be elected president of the Arab world's most populous nation and after a divisive election battle pledged to be a leader for all Egyptians.

Morsi, the country's first elected leader since a popular uprising ousted president Hosni Mubarak, won 51.73 percent of the vote against ex-premier Ahmed Shafiq.

"I will be a president for all Egyptians," Morsi said just hours after he was declared the winner.

"I call on you, great people of Egypt ... to strengthen our national unity," he added. National unity "is the only way out of these difficult times".

Morsi, who resigned from the Muslim Brotherhood to take the top job, also thanked the "martyrs" of the uprising for the victory.

"The revolution continues," he added.

The 60-year-old engineer also vowed to honour international treaties, adding: "We come in peace." Egypt was the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel, in 1979.

The election comes after 18 months of a tumultuous military-led transition from Mubarak's rule, marked by political upheaval and bloodshed.

"The winner of the election for Egyptian president on June 16-17 is Mohamed Morsi Eissa al-Ayat," the head of the electoral commission, Faruq Sultan announced earlier Sunday.

The announcement saw hundreds of thousands of Morsi supporters erupt in celebration in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the symbolic heart of the uprising that brought down the Mubarak regime in February 2011.

Cheering Egyptians waved flags and posters of the Islamist leader, who was jailed during last year's uprising.

"God is greatest" and "down with military rule" they chanted, as fireworks went off over the square.

Across Cairo, cars sounded their horns and chants of "Morsi, Morsi" were heard.

US President Barack Obama congratulated Morsi on his victory and pledged his country's support for Egypt's transition to democracy, a White House spokesman said.

Obama had also called Shafiq to encourage him to keep supporting the democratic process "and working to unify the Egyptian people."

Losing candidate Shafiq, who was widely perceived as the military's candidate, joined the country's military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi in congratulating Morsi, the official MENA news agency reported.

The interim head of the Coptic Church, many of whose faithful have feared the rise of Islamists, also congratulated Morsi.

Morsi won with 13,230,131 votes to Shafiq's 12,347,380, said Sultan, announcing the official results. The election, in which more than 50 million voters were eligible to cast their ballot, saw a 51.8 percent turnout.

Following Morsi's victory, the Muslim Brotherhood announced that he had resigned his posts in the group and in its Freedom and Justice Party, which he headed.

Shafiq supporters, who had gathered to hear the result with his campaign team in the suburbs of Cairo, were devastated by the result.

Some women screamed and others cried as several men held their heads between their hands in despair.

"It's a very sad day for Egypt," one Shafiq supporter, Maged, told AFP.

"I don't think Morsi is the winner. I'm very sad that Egypt will be represented by this man and this group."

The capital was tense before the announcement, with the city's notoriously busy streets deserted and shops and schools closed.

Extra troops and police were deployed and military helicopters flew overhead.

The road to parliament was closed to traffic, and security was tightened around vital establishments as Egyptians waited nervously for the result.

The election had polarised the nation.

While some feared a return to the old regime if Shafiq won, others wanted to keep religion out of politics, fearing that the Brotherhood would stifle personal freedom.

Shafiq ran on a strong law-and-order platform, pledging to restore security and stability. He is himself a retired general, but as a Mubarak-era minister he is reviled by the activists who spearheaded the 2011 revolt.

President-elect Morsi was the Islamists' fallback representative after their deputy leader Khairat El-Shater was disqualified from running.

During his campaign he sought to allay the fears of secular groups and the sizeable Coptic Christian minority by promising a diverse and inclusive political system.

Both Morsi and Shafiq had claimed victory in the election for a successor to Mubarak, and tensions rose after the electoral commission delayed announcing the official outcome of June 16-17 second-round run-off.

The results had initially been due on Thursday and the delay raised suspicions that the outcome of the election was being negotiated rather than counted.

But the dispute between the Brotherhood and the military remains unresolved.

The Brotherhood had rejected a constitutional declaration by the military that dissolves the Islamist-led parliament and gives the army a broad say in government policy and control over the new constitution.

The move effectively strips away any gains made by the Islamist group since the popular uprising.

It was adopted just days after a justice ministry decree granted the army powers of arrest.

Oil, Corruption And a 26-Year Regime: Uganda's Museveni Clings To Power After Wearing Out His Welcome

Kampala -- A year after winning a disputed presidential election, Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda for 26 years after wresting power as a guerrilla fighter, is facing his biggest challenge ever.

That challenge is a wave of mass protests that began last April when Ugandans, led by opposition leader and three-time presidential candidate Kizza Bisigye, took to the streets to protest swelling commodity prices, soaring unemployment and allegations that Museveni is a corrupt leader.

These complaints represent a sharp turnaround for Museveni, who was hailed as a reformer when he came to power in 1986 and was supported by the United States and other Western countries. At the time, he was lauded as a man who could oversee political liberalization and economic growth. But while Uganda has had many years of growth under Museveni, recently the economy has steadily worsened. Inflation was a staggering 18.6 percent in May, although it fell from 20 percent in the previous month. By comparison, inflation in the U.S. was just 1.7 percent that month.

And while the economy is still growing at a relatively fast clip, the pace is slowing: in fiscal year 2011, Uganda's GDP grew 6.7 percent. But in the current fiscal year, ending in June, GDP growth is expected to have slowed considerably to about 3.2 percent.

Still, Uganda's economy has a lot going for it. A landlocked country in East Africa, home to 34.5 million people, Uganda is rich in natural resources and mineral deposits. And early in 2010, 2.5 billion barrels of crude oil were discovered here.

Follow us

In years past Museveni would have been given plenty of credit for keeping the country's economy doing as well as it is, despite the downdrafts. But his black marks are adding up so quickly that these days he gets much more blame than accolades.

He has been accused of corruption, particularly over campaign financing and secretive oil contracts; in October, Uganda's parliament suspended all new deals in the oil sector after claims emerged that UK-based Tullow Oil paid multi-million dollar bribes to government ministers in order to influence decisions.

And the Ugandan president has been charged with nepotism. His wife, Janet Museveni, was given a cabinet position as minister. His son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, is a lieutenant colonel in the army, known as the Uganda People's Defense Force or UPDF, and commander of the Special Forces Group, which is responsible for the protection of the president.

"The point is that the protests would be completely ineffective if they were not popular. What makes them popular is that people have actual grievances that have made them have made them turn out in large numbers," Bisigye told journalists.

Museveni responded by threatening to eat the opposition "like samosas," a reference to the Indian food popular in a country where Indians are numerous. He's followed through on that promise by unleashing his police forces onto protesters, resulting in often violent confrontations that have left dozens dead and hundreds injured.

Despite this crackdown, the opposition isn't letting up; hardly a day passes here without the dispersing or arresting of protesters in Kampala. Uganda's Martyrs Day celebrations, held on June 3 of every year to commemorate a group of executed Christians, saw scores of opposition youth violently arrested after attempting to distribute anti-government stickers during the religious festival in Namugongo, a suburb of the Ugandan capital.

Those arrests came after an incident in which women demonstrators were arrested after stripping to their bras, a radical act in this conservative country, in protest against the alleged sexual assault by Museveni's police force on a high-profile female opposition politician, Ingrid Turinawe. The head of the Women's League of the Forum for Democratic Change, or FDC, was attacked in April, according to accusers.

Now, police brutality and Museveni's decision to use force to control his opposition are fueling his fall from grace. Ugandans just want to see him gone, a notion supported by an April opinion poll by the firm Research World International; 56 percent said they wanted Museveni to resign.

"Within the National Resistance Movement [Museveni's party] people have outgrown the personality of Museveni," Ugandan pollster Patrick Wakida said. "They think that they can live without him. This is very interesting because now Museveni is less popular than his party."

When all you want to do is gain weight | WQAD.com ? Quad Cities ...

(CNN) ? Like many 23-year-olds, Amanda Eang is self-conscious about her body. She constantly covers up and wears loose-fitting clothing to disguise her shape.

At five-foot-two, she weighs just 93 pounds, and for years she has tried to gain weight.

?There are a lot of shows about losing weight, but they really don?t have anything for people who are underweight,? she says. ?It?s just as frustrating for people who are trying to gain weight.?

Eang, who lives in Toronto, says she has tried everything: eating junk food (which left her with high cholesterol), drinking supplements and doing resistance training. She?d like to reach 110 pounds, but she has never even weighed 100 pounds.

Fewer than 2% of adults in the United States are underweight, according to 2007 to 2010 data collected by the National Center for Health Statistics. To be considered underweight, individuals must have a body mass index of less than 18.5. A woman who is five-foot-six, for example, would weigh 114 pounds or less.

For some, difficulty gaining weight can be a frustrating problem and must be approached in a healthy way, experts say.

Ruling out problems

Before attempting to put on pounds, individuals who feel they are underweight should visit their primary care doctor for a complete physical examination, says Craig Primack, a medical obesity specialist and member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians.

A physician can rule out medical issues that would impede weight gain or cause malabsorption, including celiac disease, lactose intolerance, bacterial overgrowth syndrome or B12 deficiency.

Genetics play a big role in why some people are underweight, Primack says. A high metabolic rate is usually a factor, he says

The rest is a mystery. Experts have done significantly less research about being underweight than causes of being overweight.

If individuals are slightly underweight, it might not be a sign of a problem. They may be in sync with their bodies? needs and avoid overeating, Primack says.

Being naturally underweight is different from an eating disorder, in which individuals consciously try to reduce their size and avoid eating through various means.

?If someone has a problematic relationship with food, that?s an eating disorder, and it doesn?t matter what your weight is,? says Linda Bacon, a psychologist and researcher at the University of California at Davis and author of ?Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight.?

In extreme cases, being underweight can lead to difficulty fighting diseases, and for women it could lead to amenorrhea, or inability to menstruate, says Rachel Begun, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

If individuals are underweight and also not getting enough nutrients, this could cause osteoporosis, anemia and other nutrient-related conditions.

Putting on the pounds

No matter the reason for wanting to gain weight, it is important to focus on the quality, not the quantity, of calories consumed, Begun says.

?The whole point is to eat more calories, but it shouldn?t be a license to gorge on empty calorie foods,? she says.

Pairing calorie intake with both aerobic exercise and weight resistance training is crucial for cardiovascular health, she says.

Primack suggests fewer repetitions of higher weight in exercises that incorporate the whole body, done three to four times per week, in addition to cardiovascular exercise.

At 28 years old, five-foot-ten and 138 pounds, Bryan Johnson of Minneapolis has tried some of these tactics to little avail.

He?d like to reach 160 pounds, a goal he says he?s ?pretty much given up on.? He?s attempted intense workouts, drinking protein supplements and eating until he feels sick. Sticking to these plans despite his work schedule has been his biggest obstacle, he says.

Like healthy weight loss, healthy weight gain takes time, Begun says. Individuals should try to put on about one pound per week, which means adding about 500 calories per day, she says. This allows for adding lean muscle and bone mass rather than unhealthy fat.

It is best to choose foods from all food groups, especially complex carbohydrates, lean protein and healthy fats. Some healthy yet calorie-packed options include nuts and nut butters, seeds, dried fruit, low-fat milk, yogurt smoothies, avocado, hummus and other bean spreads, Begun says.

Whole grain pastas, sauces with brown lean beef and fish are also positive choices, Primack says.

Gaining a new perspective

As society in general has become increasingly overweight, underweight individuals may feel they stand out.

Others should be conscious of how their remarks that someone looks ?too skinny? could be hurtful, Eang says.

?Some people have said, ?Oh, you look fine,? ? and there are other people who say, ?You?re skinny.? It?s the same way, that if a person were fat, (commenting on) it would be offensive.?

Bacon says it is more important to practice healthy habits than to worry about weight and societal ideas about beauty and attractiveness.

?I don?t think the answer is to gain weight to meet social standards or meet some kind of arbitrary idea of health,? she says. ?We have so many social and health expectations that aren?t predicated on what?s true for the individual.?

If underweight individuals are living healthy lifestyles but still find themselves on the lower end of the weight spectrum, it may be helpful to change how they view their bodies, she says.

?The best avenue is to start to appreciate the functionality of our bodies,? she says. ?It is just amazing I have legs that can carry me from one place to another ? that we have mouths that allow many of us to be able to speak. There is so much we can just appreciate and marvel at in our bodies.?

Are you part of the ?2 percent?? Do you feel as if you are underweight and want to gain a few pounds? Is weight even the best way to determine if an individual is healthy? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comment section below.

China to try manual space docking

China is to make its first ever attempt at manually docking a spacecraft with another space module.

Astronauts on the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft will try to dock with the Tiangong-1 lab module without relying on an automated system.

Jing Haipeng, Liu Wang and China's first female astronaut, Liu Yang, will attempt the manoeuvre, which must be carried out very delicately.

Authorities in China said the docking would take place at around 04:00 GMT.

Liu Wang will be in charge of the manual docking manoeuvres, while Liu Yang will conduct aerospace experiments, according to AFP news agency.

The attempt will help in the construction of a space station, which China aims to complete by 2020, said AFP.

A manual docking procedure would be used in the event of a failure with the automated system.

Manual docking was carried out by the USSR and US successfully in the 1960s.

The Shenzhou-9 spacecraft was launched on 16 June.

It docked with the Tiangong-1 module on 18 June after a successful automatic procedure.

Technology News ? Computer virus hits office printers

virus-hits-office-printersA technology news source reveals that numerous companies faced real challenge when they had tough time printing documents. Thousands of pages of paper had been sent to bins as the Windows virus had wrecked the numerous computers. If security firms are to be believed, the large businesses in the US, India, Europe, and South America were among the most affected ones. The virus to be blamed for this menace is a malicious program named Milicenso which is a pet tool for hi-tech cyber criminal groups and used many a times.

Symantec, the security firm had scrutinized the virus, Milicenso and has reported that this virus was first observed in 2010. ?Since then it has emerged again and again to cause serious implications on thousands of the computers across the world. The latest attack was in the form of French language adware which was generously distributed. Milicenso traces out various modes of inference taint a computer. One of its most preferred modes of attack is through an email attachment sent via a compromised website or being attached as a fake video decoder.

No sooner than the computer virus is installed, it locates a place on the net and further re-directs web traffic to meet adverts. According to Symantec a partial impact of the virus attack was that it generated a file in a Computer?s printer queue. This in-turn compromises the contents of the files in the main directory of the virus into print jobs. Symantec also believes, ?The garbled printouts appear to be a side effect of the infection vector rather an intentional goal of the author?.

The forums run by the security firm, Symantec had been crammed with the impacts reported by the virus victims. It was also reported that there were quite adverse cases which witnessed hundreds of printers issuing twaddle printouts and wasted numerous rolls of paper. Symantec and several other security firms have worked out updates to track Milicenso and get it removed completely along with its adverse effects.

Remembering Alan Turing at 100

Celebrating Alan Turing at 100

Alan Turing would have turned 100 this week, an event that would have, no doubt, been greeted with all manner of pomp -- the centennial of a man whose mid-century concepts would set the stage for modern computing. Turing, of course, never made it that far, found dead at age 41 from cyanide poisoning, possibly self-inflicted. His story is that of a brilliant mind cut down in its prime for sad and ultimately baffling reasons, a man who accomplished so much in a short time and almost certainly would have had far more to give, if not for a society that couldn't accept him for who he was.

The London-born computing pioneer's name is probably most immediately recognized in the form of the Turing Machine, the "automatic machine" he discussed in a 1936 paper and formally extrapolated over the years. The concept would help lay the foundation for future computer science, arguing that a simple machine, given enough tape (or, perhaps more appropriately in the modern sense, storage) could be used to solve complex equations. All that was needed as Turing laid it out, was a writing method, a way of manipulating what's written and a really long ream to write on. In order to increase the complexity, only the storage, not the machine, needs upgrading.

Bad science on top of stigma for lesbian and gay parents ? Family ...

In the category of op-ed pieces The Man chose not to publish, here?s what I wrote about Mark Regnerus?s Social Science Research?article??How different are the adult children of parents who have same-sex relationships? Findings from the New Family Structures Study.? Blog readers get a special edition with links sprinkled in.

"happy gay parents" collage courtesy Google Image search

By Philip N. Cohen

What do you get when you combine bad science with ideological motives? A disingenuous attempt to stigmatize families that distracts from the serious problems many of them face.

Conservative activists last week leaped to embrace a paper purporting to show that the adult children of gay and lesbian parents fare poorly compared to those raised by stably married heterosexual couples. Although many social scientists ? myself included ? believe the study is seriously flawed, it immediately became a weapon in the political arsenal against marriage and parental rights for gays and lesbians.

The researcher, sociologist Mark Regnerus, analyzed survey responses from young adults who described their family structure growing up. He compared those who lived their whole childhoods with two married, biological parents, to those who reported that one of their parents had ever had a same-sex romantic relationship. The finding: those in the latter category were more likely to report having a variety of economic and emotional problems.

There are two design problems that render the study unfit for drawing meaningful conclusions. First, the parents who ever had a same-sex relationship are a widely diverse group that share not only sexual orientation, but, more importantly, a history of family instability. Although they include a tiny number of couples who raised their children as long-term, committed partners, the vast majority were single or divorced parents. Any difference that might be the result of parents? sexual orientation is confounded with the differences between those in long-term stable marriages versus disrupted families.

Second, the study did not take into account many background factors known to have dramatic effects on child wellbeing. For example, it is a sad fact that those from wealthy backgrounds are (on average) more likely to get and stay married (to each other), and more likely to have children who grow up to be rich and successful. Totally apart from sexual orientation, any study of how family background affects adult outcomes needs to take such material factors into account. The Regnerus study falls far short of the depth and quality necessary to draw even basic conclusions.

The research was derailed by its obsessive focus on sexual orientation ? over more tangible factors that do affect children?s wellbeing. That is why the researcher lumped all gay and lesbian parents together, rather than differentiating families based on parenting practices, family stability or access to resources. That emphasis is not surprising, however, because Regnerus has a published track record as a social conservative advocate for ?traditional? marriage, what he calls ?the gold standard of a married mom and dad.? And the study was the product of funding by the arch conservative Witherspoon Institute and Bradley Foundation.

In the article itself, Regnerus wisely included some disclaiming language, cautioning against a causal interpretation of the role of parents? sexual orientation. He wrote, ?I have not and will not speculate here on causality, in part because the data are not optimally designed to do so.? Without that caveat, the paper never would have passed muster for a peer-reviewed publication.

However, Regnerus has since sacrificed that scientific pretense for his political convictions. ?The most significant story in this study,? he declared, ?is arguably that children appear most apt to succeed well as adults when they spend their entire childhood with their married mother and father.? As he knows, however, his stably married-couple families had many opportunities and advantages over the other parents that the study could not account for.

For children to grow up happy and successful, loved and secure, parenting does matter ? a parent or parents who love, care for, and develop a positive relationship with their children. Also vitally important are access to financial resources, community support, good schooling, housing, healthcare and basic security. When families have these assets, they are very likely to have positive outcomes regardless of the gender of their parents.

This is what researchers and child welfare organizations mean when they say the sexual orientation of parents should not be a determining factor in children?s adoption, placement or support. In fact, the major American medical academies and associations ? pediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers ? all support the adoption and parenting rights of gay and lesbian couples.

Too many children in this country have serious problems that need attention ? in their families, schools, housing, healthcare and nutrition ? for us to devote our energies to self-serving ideological crusades that do more to stigmatize families than help them to succeed. It would be especially harmful ? and shameful ? if such a study were used to justify denying foster and adopted children the right to live in the loving families of gay and lesbian parents who are prepared to care for them.

?I previously posted on the?rushed timeline?of the article (publishing before the data were all collected.

Nuns start tour protesting Republican budget plan

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? A group of Roman Catholic nuns began a nine-state bus tour protesting proposed federal budget cuts Monday, saying they weren't trying to flout recent Vatican criticisms of socially active nuns but felt called to show how Republican policies are affecting low-income families.

The tour was organized by Network, a Washington-based Catholic social justice group criticized in a recent Vatican report that said some organizations led by nuns have focused too much on economic injustice while failing to promote the church's teachings on abortion and same-sex marriage. The Vatican asked U.S. bishops to look at Network's ties to another group of nuns it is reorganizing because of what the church calls "serious doctrinal problems."

Sister Simone Campbell, Network's executive director, while the tour may appear to have been organized to counter recent criticism of social activist nuns by the Vatican and American bishops, it was not. The timing was in response to consideration of the federal budget in Congress, she said.

"We're doing this because of what's happening on the Hill," she told The Associated Press in an interview. "We're desperate to get the word out, that's why we're doing it now."

But if the 14 nuns who will rotate on and off the bus during the next two weeks weren't trying to counter the Vatican, they likely did little to ease its concerns about social activism.

The tour kicked off with a rally that had the feel of a political event. About 20 supporters brought flowers and balloons and sang, "Alleluia," as the nuns boarded a modern tour bus decorated with bright-colored graphics.

While the nuns say they aren't opposing any specific Republican candidate, they plan stops at the offices of several closely tied to the budget process, including House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the architect of the House-passed budget. Their first stop Monday was Rep. Steve King's office in Ames. The tour will end in Washington on July 2.

The mandate to crack down on socially active nuns upset some church parishioners who turned out to support the nuns.

"They want to bully these nuns and shut them down and tell them: 'Get back in your place, ladies.' No, it's not going to be that way anymore," said Mary Ann McCoy, of Des Moines, who attends St. Ambrose Cathedral.

She said the Vatican and bishops speaking so harshly of nuns has split the church.

"They're women of courage," McCoy said. "Back in the Old Testament they talked about prophets. A prophet is somebody who speaks for God and these are the things that God talked about ? injustice, the poor, the marginalized, woman. Jesus was the greatest prophet when he went out and he shook things up a lot. Well, I think the sisters are walking the walk and talking the talk and that's what's important to us."

While the Vatican has criticized Network, church officials have not ordered a full-scale overhaul of it as is being done with another group, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. After a two-year investigation, the Vatican concluded the conference had undermined Roman Catholic teaching with radical feminist themes and taken positions that undermined Catholic teaching on the all-male priesthood, marriage and homosexuality. Three U.S. bishops, including Seattle Archbishop J. Peter Sartain, have been given five years to reorganize that group.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops did not immediately comment on the bus tour.

Campbell said if the Vatican would talk to her group, she could explain that it was simply continuing the work on poverty and economic injustice that has been its focus for 40 years.

Father Michael Amadeo, who attended the rally and is pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Des Moines, said that although the Vatican may have issues with Women Religious, he doesn't think the bus tour conflicts with church teachings.

"These are Catholic social teachings which we've had for decades," he said. "What they're trying to highlight both to communities as well as legislators is what our Catholic social teachers are, and they are about not only charity work but asking the tough questions. Why are these people homeless? Why are they in shelters? Why are they on food stamps? Part of our social justice teaching is asking questions about justice."

Amadeo said 300 people turned out Sunday night for a send-off prayer service for the nuns at his church. He said that's an indication of support and there are plenty of people committed to working for justice and helping the poor.

"Hopefully this will be a groundswell as it heads across the nation," he said.

Boehner's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the bus tour.

King's office responded with an email faulting "the failed policies of President Obama and Nancy Pelosi," vowing to repeal the president's health care reform law and promising to pass a balanced budget amendment. The email did not say anything specifically about the nuns.

Ryan's spokeswoman also did not mention the nuns when she responded to a request for comment by sending several Internet links to interviews and opinion pieces he's written on the budget. One was published April 25 in the National Catholic Register and is posted on his website.

"Our budget ends welfare for those who don't need it, but strengthens welfare programs for those who do. Government safety-net programs have been stretched to the breaking point in recent years, failing the very citizens who need help the most," he wrote. "... We rightly pride ourselves on looking out for one another ? and government has an important role to play in that. But relying on distant government bureaucracies to lead this effort just hasn't worked."

American Federation for Aging Research

New York, NY June 18, 2012 - The American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) announced today a new grant program that will support collaboration among young scientists from different scientific disciplines, to help tackle some of the most vexing questions about Alzheimer's disease. Known as The Collaborative Research Awards Program in Alzheimer's Disease, the new initiative is supported by The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation and the Diane and Guilford Glazer Foundation, in partnership with AFAR, which manages the program.

"These investigators are already playing a key role in the development of new knowledge about Alzheimer's disease," said Stephanie Lederman, EdM, Executive Director, AFAR. "It is our hope that, by fostering collaboration across disciplines, we will spur creative approaches that will advance the care of those with the disease."

Grants will be given to alumni grantees of the New Investigators in Alzheimer's Disease program, who will collaborate on interdisciplinary basic and translational research projects. To date, the Program has funded 26 New Investigators in the United States and Israel. The primary goals of this program are to support important research in areas in which more scientific investigation is needed to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and to stimulate career development of junior researchers.

Martin H. Blank, Jr., COO and Co-director of The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation says "The current program has a track record of fostering extraordinary research careers in aging and Alzheimer's disease. The collaborative program will allow these talented researchers to expand into projects that extend beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries to create multidimensional, multidisciplinary, and integrative research to ultimately help those with this devastating disease."

John Fishel, consultant to the Diane and Guilford Glazer Foundation, adds "This initiative will create an environment that can help spur discovery. We will be supporting the best and brightest, and enabling them to combine their skills to put new ideas into action."

Medical research increasingly demands that investigators move beyond the confines of their own disciplines and explore new models of interdisciplinary research teams. This is particularly the case in Alzheimer's disease research, due to the complexity of the human brain and the disease itself.

The new program addresses the growing need for researchers to address Alzheimer's disease one of the most devastating age-related diseases, for which there is currently no effective treatment. Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible brain disorder that develops gradually and results in memory loss, and behavior and personality changes in its victims. According to recent estimates by the Alzheimer's Association, the number of Americans aged 65 and older with Alzheimer's disease will reach 16 million by 2050.

Two collaborative grants of up to $40,000 each will be awarded to research teams over the next two years. For more information, visit AFAR's website at www.afar.org.

Mutilated women rediscover sexual pleasure

Pioneering reconstructive surgery has brought new hope to a small number of the 140 million women worldwide who have suffered the pain and sexual desolation of female genital mutilation. Newly published feedback from hundreds of women who have had the reparative surgery reveals that it worked for most of them, easing pain and improving sexual pleasure.

"The real news is that it's feasible to give back pleasure, feasible to reconstruct the clitoris, and possible to give women back their lost identities," says Pierre Fold?s of the Saint Germain Poissy Hospital in France, who developed the procedure.

Fold?s and his colleagues followed up almost 3000 women ? mostly from Mali, Senegal and Ivory Coast ? one year after they had undergone the procedure. Because internal clitoral tissue survives the mutilation, the surgeons were able to trim away scar tissue and build a new clitoris that would protrude in the normal way.

Of the 866 women who responded to the follow-up, 821 reported that their pain had improved or was no worse. Clitoral pleasure had improved or was no worse in 815 of the women. Some 290 women reported a substantial easing of pain, and 430 experienced orgasms ? including 129 who had never had them before.

Only 5 per cent of the respondents suffered side effects, such as bleeding, and 20 women had less clitoral pleasure than before the procedure.

All surgery was performed in France, but Fold?s says there are plans to train surgeons in Dakar, Senegal, where female genital mutilation is fiercely opposed by the NGO Tostan.
