Missing Time

?High up in the North in the land called Svithj?d, there stands a rock. It is hundred miles high and a hundred miles wide. Once every thousands years a little bird comes to this rock to sharpen its beak. When the rock has been thus worn away, then a single day of eternity will have gone by.?
Norwegian folktale as recounted by Hendrik Van Loon in ?Story of Mankind?

Fig.1. Layers and erosion ? clues to the real age of mountains?

In the early 19th century the idea of an old earth became rapidly accepted, based on the observation that most processes on earth, like formation and erosion of mountains, occur very slow. Also Charles Darwin observations in biology confirmed the geological timescale. As evolution occurs over thousands, maybe millions of generations, to explain the recent biodiversity and specialization also earth had to be thousands, maybe million of years old ? not even considering global extinction events and the successive period of recovery.
But how old is earth exactly and how can we know?

The British astronomer Edmund Halley (1656-1742) suggested in 1775 that a minimum age of the oceans (and therefore earth) could be estimated by measuring the input of dissolved elements by rivers and the resulting increase in salinity. However lacking precise measurements this idea remained a hypothetical approach. Benoit De Maillet (1656 ? 1738), French consul in Egypt, proposed, based on his observations of the sea level drop along the Egyptian coasts, that earth was completely inundated 2.000 million years ago.

In 1774 the French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) published in the ?Histoire Naturelle? the results of his experiments with cooling iron spheres. Based on the popular hypothesis that earth formed from a molten sphere of condensated interstellar matter, he used the cooling time of incandescent iron spheres to calculate the age of the (solid parts) of the globe. Buffon?s published results gave an age of 75.000 years for the last creation (Buffon proposed a succession of various epochs of animal life, based on his knowledge of past mass extinctions), however from unpublished notes, where he address the problems and speculations concerning his calculations, it seems that Buffon considered a much older earth ? million of years in the making ? possible.

James Hutton had in 1785 successfully argued that the deposition of layers need long time periods, however he considered any exact age estimates as mere speculation. Later geologists were more confident and based on the thickness and erosion rates of rock formations tried to calculate the age of earth.
Darwin estimated from the thickness of geological formations of the Wealden region an age of 300 million years. One of Britain?s leading geologists, Sir Archibald Geikie (1835-1924), used the height of mountains and denudation rates to calculate the age of continents. According to his calculation, North America would be eroded away in 4,5 million years and Europe would last for just 4 million years, if there are no processes forming new mountains. Charles Lyell published ages ranging from 20 to 240 million years based on the supposed time intervals needed for certain mollusc-assemblages to become replaced in the fossil record. In 1899 the British physicist and geologist John Joly (1857 ? 1933) reproached the problem of the salinity of the great oceans, calculating a time interval of 90 million years to transform the primordial freshwater into water with the recent salt concentration.

Physicist William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin (1824-1907) became interested in the question of the age of earth by his studies on the physicals properties of the sun. Kelvin calculated the energy dispersal of the sun (which he considered made of an incandescent liquid) and concluded that sun was between 400 to 20 million years old, favouring in the end the younger age. As the possible age of earth was constrained by the age of the sun most of the ages postulated by geologist were erroneous ? so it seemed at the time... to be continued.

Court: S. Africa official delayed Dalai Lama visa

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? A court in South Africa has ruled that a government minister "unreasonably delayed" a decision about whether to grant the Dalai Lama a visa for a trip he planned here in 2011.

The Supreme Court of Appeal issued its judgment Thursday in the case involving former Home Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. The court said that it was clear officials worried a visit by the Dalai Lama would upset China, which accuses the Dalai Lama of being a separatist.

The court said officials showed "deliberate procrastination" in delaying their decision.

The Dalai Lama was to attend the 80th birthday party of a fellow Nobel laureate, Archbishop Desmond Tutu. At the time, Tutu said the African National Congress-led government was worse than the country's former oppressive white regime for not issuing the visa.

Palestinians certain to win recognition as a state

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The Palestinians are certain to win U.N. recognition as a state Thursday in a General Assembly vote that Israel and the United States warn could delay hopes of achieving an independent Palestinian homeland through peace talks with Israel.

The United States, Israel's closest ally, mounted an aggressive campaign to head off the General Assembly vote, which the Palestinians view as a historic step in their quest for global recognition.

In a last-ditch move Wednesday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns made a personal appeal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas promising that President Barack Obama would re-engage as a mediator in 2013 if Abbas abandoned the effort to seek statehood. The Palestinian leader refused, said Abbas aide Saeb Erekat.

With most of the 193 General Assembly member states sympathetic to the Palestinians, the vote is certain to succeed. Several key countries, including France, have recently announced they would support the move to elevate the Palestinians from the status of U.N. observer to nonmember observer state. However, a country's vote in favor of the status change does not automatically imply its individual recognition of a Palestine state, something that must be done bilaterally.

The Palestinians say they need U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, the lands Israel captured in 1967, to be able to resume negotiations with Israel. They say global recognition of the 1967 lines as the borders of Palestine is meant to salvage a peace deal, not sabotage it, as Israel claims.

The non-member observer state status could also open the way for possible war crimes charges against the Jewish state at the International Criminal Court.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday the recognition of an independent state of Palestine in the U.N. General Assembly will not advance the Palestinians' quest for a homeland. He said the Palestinians will not win a state until they recognize Israel as the Jewish homeland, declare an end to their conflict with the Jewish state and agree to security arrangements that protect Israel.

While Israel argues that Abbas is trying to dictate the outcome of border talks by going to the U.N., the recognition request presented to the world body in fact calls for a quick resumption of negotiations on all core issues of the conflict, including borders.

Netanyahu's predecessors accepted the 1967 lines as a basis for border talks. Netanyahu has rejected the idea, while pressing ahead with Jewish settlement building on war-won land, giving Abbas little incentive to negotiate.

For Abbas, the U.N. bid is crucial if he wants to maintain his leadership and relevance, especially following the recent conflict between his Hamas rivals in Gaza and Israel. The conflict saw the Islamic militant group claim victory and raise its standing in the Arab world, while Abbas' Fatah movement was sidelined and marginalized.

The Palestinians chose the "International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People" for the vote. Before it takes place, there will be a morning of speeches by supporters focusing on the rights of the Palestinians. Abbas is scheduled to speak at that meeting, and again in the afternoon when he will present the case for Palestinian statehood in the General Assembly.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Wednesday that the U.N. vote will not fulfill the goal of independent Palestinian and Israeli states living side by side in peace, which the U.S. strongly supports because that requires direct negotiations.

"We need an environment conducive to that," she told reporters in Washington. "And we've urged both parties to refrain from actions that might in any way make a return to meaningful negotiations that focus on getting to a resolution more difficult."

The U.S. Congress has threatened financial sanctions if the Palestinians improve their status at the United Nations.

Ahead of the vote, Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch filed an amendment to a defense bill Wednesday that would eliminate funding for the United Nations if the General Assembly changes Palestine's status.

"Increasing the Palestinians' role in the United Nations is absolutely the wrong approach, especially in light of recent military developments in the Middle East," he said in a statement. "Israel is one of America's closest allies, and any movement to strengthen one of its fiercest enemies must not be tolerated."

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said that by going to the U.N., the Palestinians violate "both the spirit and the word of signed agreements to solve issues through negotiations," which broke down four years ago.

But Israeli officials appeared to back away from threats of drastic measures if the Palestinians get U.N. approval, with officials suggesting the government would take steps only if the Palestinians use their new status to act against Israel.

Regev, meanwhile, affirmed that Israel is willing to resume talks without preconditions.

U.N. diplomats said they will be listening closely to Abbas' speech to the General Assembly on Thursday afternoon before the vote to see if he makes an offer of fresh negotiations with no strings, which could lead to new talks. The Palestinians have been demanding a freeze on Israeli settlements as a precondition.

As a sign of the importance Israel attaches to the vote, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman flew to New York and was scheduled to meet Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon before the vote. Israel's U.N. Ambassador Ron Prosor had been scheduled to speak in the General Assembly after Abbas, but it appears Lieberman may now make Israel's case opposing the resolution.

Unlike the Security Council, there are no vetoes in the General Assembly. The world body is dominated by countries sympathetic to the Palestinian cause and the resolution to raise its status from an observer to a nonmember observer state only requires a majority vote for approval. To date, 132 countries ? over two-thirds of the U.N. member states ? have recognized the state of Palestine.

The Palestinians have been courting Western nations, especially the Europeans, seen as critical to enhancing their international standing. A number have announced they will vote "yes" including France, Spain, Norway, Denmark and Switzerland. Those opposed or abstaining include the U.S., Israel, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands and Australia.

The Palestinians turned to the General Assembly after the United States announced it would veto their bid last fall for full U.N. membership until there is a peace deal with Israel.

Following last year's move by the Palestinians to join the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO, the United States withheld funds from the organization, which amount to 22 percent of its budget. The U.S. also withheld money from the Palestinians.

Cody Rhodes updates WWE Universe on injury, calls Kane a "modern day Dude Love"

For the first time since being injured during a fierce WWE Tag Team Title Match against Team Hell No on WWE Main Event, Rhodes updates the WWE Universe on his status. Rhodes, who has not competed in a match since Nov. 14 due to injuries suffered at the hands of Kane, talks candidly about what?s next for Team Rhodes Scholars and makes eye-raising remarks about The Big Red Monster.

WWE.COM: Can you talk a little about the injury? You?Tweeted that you tore your trap and your deltoid and that you separated your shoulder. Can you talk about the seriousness of such injuries?

CODY RHODES: Well, honestly, the best way I?ve heard the injury described, is that I dodged a bullet. The trap tear is a grade two (on a scale of one to three), but I don?t need surgery ? the tears will heal themselves over time with proper physical therapy. The separated shoulder is an old injury from amateur wrestling, and it?s basically the area that could have been considerably worse. I could have landed on my neck, but I turned just in time to land on my shoulder. The separated shoulder is where the most pain is and it?s the AC joint, but like I said, I dodged a bullet ? no surgery. (WATCH HOW IT HAPPENED)

WWE.COM: How soon did you know you were in trouble, and what was going through your head at the time? Do you remember anything in the ring or backstage after it happened?

RHODES: I thought I broke my arm, and I was in a very bad position in the ring. You know, ring awareness is something I?ve always been fond of ? having ring awareness, having mat awareness. Always knowing where I am at all times. Especially in a tag team situation, knowing if I?m on my side of the ring. I wasn?t. I was in enemy territory and Daniel Bryan had me wide open.

Actually, everything after Kane dropped me, I don?t remember. I remember hitting the mat one more time, and then I thought that I immediately tagged out, but watching back, there?s a whole period of a minute, a minute-and-a-half, where I faked out Daniel Bryan, who missed a headbutt and I just laid there. I didn?t know that ? I thought I was much more cognizant than I was, but watching back I didn?t know that I was on the apron, I didn?t know that the doctor was tugging at my boots.

I just was contemplating in my head ? the only thing I remember thinking was if I could get in there and kick [Daniel Bryan], then tag Damien real quick and tag out, that I could offer something still. Damien looked at me one time after I said, "tag me in," after I got my bearings a little bit, but he certainly had no intentions of tagging me in, at great cost to himself. So I owe Damien Sandow a lot.

WWE.COM: Speaking of your tag team partner, are you still in regular contact with Damien Sandow?

RHODES: We haven?t had as much personal contact as I?d like. One of the things I most look forward to with Damien is our Monday, Wednesday and Friday "war room" sessions where we would discuss everything in the WWE Universe, and all of the Superstars and Divas. It was a real gripe fest, but a nice period of time to vent.

Now he?s navigating the murky waters of singles competiton and I wish him ? genuinely ? good luck. I just hope he doesn?t forget that Team Rhodes Scholars was on a very steep climb to the top.

WWE.COM: In your?TOUT from a couple of days ago, you wished Sandow luck but you also cautioned not to forget "the bigger picture." Is that bigger picture you were referring to winning the WWE Tag Team Titles?

RHODES: It?s not about winning the WWE Tag Team Championship anymore ? and I hate saying that because they are absolutely prestigious in every way, and I?ve been fortunate enough to be a four-time Tag Team Champion.

What I meant by that, is that this is a personal issue, and I hope and I think that Mr. Sandow understands it?s a personal issue. Had I landed on my neck, I would not be able to do this anymore. My boyhood dream of being in WWE and ascending is paramaount. It?s something that ceraintly could have been stopped dead in its tracks ? which is something I thought would never happen, and I hope that Damien realizes how strong of a personal issue it is for me.

And I?ll be honest ? it?s not so much with Team Hell No and their goofy schtick of ?Yes! Yes!" and "No! No!" and "red rules" ? it?s more with Kane. I?m aware of the monster, but I?m also aware of the fact that he?s slowly becoming the modern day Dude Love ? he?s just, I don?t know, disintegrating into a novelty joke and I would certainly like to get my shots in on him before he vanishes completely.

WWE.COM: Wow, those are some strong words. Do you feel that, besides being less intimidating (which I?m gathering from what you just said), do you feel that Kane is less effective and less physical now that he?s a part of Team Hell No?

RHODES: Absolutely not. One thing I won't do, by any means, is disrparage who he was prior. He?s certainly not less physical, and he?s certainly not less intimidating. But the real thing is, what do I have to be intimidated by?

In the state of Ohio alone ? just Ohio ? someone brought this up to me. I lost half my blood supply, practically, in a Street Fight Match against Randy Orton, and then almost a year later, Kane drops me and I end up having the first muscle tears I?ve had in my entire life being an athlete.

I?ve given a great deal. When they talk about paying your dues, I don?t care that I?m 27. I?ve paid a good chunk of them. So coming back, I?m not easily intimidated, I?m not out there to do a "ha ha" bit on Monday Night Raw or Friday Night SmackDown. I?m specifically coming back with something. What do I have to fear?

I?m not coming back to make people laugh. I?m coming back to make people cry.

WWE.COM: So, more important to you than winning the WWE Tag Team Titles is you exacting revenge on Kane?

RHODES: I think they coincide. And as you?ve been asking questions, I realize that they coincide. Winning the WWE Tag Team Championship for the fifth time is the perfect revenge, and it?s the perfect wake-up call for someone like Kane, one of WWE?s resident monsters. [Kane is] genuinely a legend in sports-entertainment, but I would say that he?s on the back end of that legendary career and I have no problem waking the monster up, as people saw with Big Show heading into WrestleMania.

I don?t mind poking the bear. You don?t get anywhere by tiptoeing around anything. Certainly, I?d rather step on toes than tiptoe around anybody.

WWE.COM: Switching gears a bit, how do you think Damien Sandow has performed since your injury?

RHODES: I was disappointed that he was unable to put somebody like Kofi Kingston away, but in the same token, you?re only as good as your last match. And [Damien's] last match was against Zack Ryder [on the Nov. 26 episode of Raw], and he made short work of a very credible Superstar in Zack Ryder, so I think he just has to get back in the rhythm. (WATCH)

When you?ve been in a tag team, and you?ve been on a long European tour, [a singles match] is a different type of match. It?s a different type of breathing for one, and he?s getting his bearings, I hope, and he?s someone who won?t show you if there?s any rust in his singles work. He?ll manage to hide it and that?s one of the things I admire about him, certainly.

You?re only as good as your last match, and his last match ended in a victory for him, so I think he?s doing well.

WWE.COM: Finally, when can the WWE Universe expect you to return to the ring?

RHODES: I am a quick healer and I can fight through pain, but I will not rush my return to the ring. There is no hard timeline for my return.

GTA Radio stations now available via Android app - Video Games ...

Most of us have played Grand Theft Auto (GTA) and the major part of the game involves getting in and out of cars. The moment you shut the door of the car and start driving, you are treated to a radio station. These radio stations have their dedicated set of fans (some of them right here in Digit office) and most of these are available on YouTube as audio clips.

Today however, we came across a news item that will bring a smile on every GTA fan?s face. GTA Radio stations are now available via an app on the Google Play store.

GTA Radio is available as a free app on the Play Store. The main page shows you six GTA games: GTA III; GTA Vice City; GTA Liberty Stories; GTA Vice City Stories; GTA San Andreas and GTA IV. So you can head straight to your favourite game from the franchise and listen to the radio stations within that game. We wasted no time and went straight to Vice City and played Flash FM.

When you open any station, it takes some time to buffer depending on your internet speeds. The audio quality was not the best and there were some radio stations mission on GTA IV, but the developers have said that they would keep adding more stations. But all in all, if you are a GTA fan and loved the radio stations in it, this app is a nice way to relive the gaming sessions.

5 Early Warning Signs He's Too Controlling | World of Psychology

5 Early Warning Signs He's Too ControllingThis guest article from YourTango was written by?Sherry Gaba.

For people who grew up in homes with very controlling or abusive parents, it can be difficult to distinguish between control and concern in dating relationships. Women and men with a history of love addiction often have the same problem.

One way to differentiate between controlling behavior and behavior that is out of concern for you is to take a close look at the specific situation. Extreme reactions to innocent mistakes are a sure sign of control.

There are several early warning signs of a controlling partner. Watch for these tell-tale indicators that the person you?re dating is not merely concerned ? he may be controlling and potentially even abusive.

1. He constantly sends you text messages.

Everyone loves to text and stay in touch. When the text messages become intrusive, abusive and demanding this is not just concern it is abuse.

2. He insists you do everything together all the time.

Controlling people need to manage your life and they don?t want you to do anything without their knowledge. The way to control that is to be with you at all times.

3. You can?t have friends or family around.

Controlling people want to keep you all to themselves. While these may seem romantic and intimate, it is a clear way to isolate you from people that can help and support you in getting out of the relationship.

4. He is easily offended by innocent mistakes.

You forget to call and say you are running late or you forget that you promised to go to a movie, and your partner responds with extreme anger, hurt or bitterness. Life happens and people make mistakes and forget. Controlling people see everything as an attempt to hurt them, and they resent even minor slights or mistakes way out of proportion.

5. He disapproves of your clothing.

A partner has the right to like or dislike what you wear. Unless it is overly revealing or completely inappropriate, they should respect your choice even if it is not their favorite. However, if they demand you wear certain clothing or not wear particular items that are appropriate you have a controlling partner on your hands.

Watch for these early signs of control in your relationship. Counseling can help to deal with these issues before they become a greater problem or even rise to the level of abuse.

Dolphins Cycling Challenge raises $2.2 million for fight against cancer

The Dolphins Cycling Challenge has more than doubled its contribution to the fight against cancer for the second year in a row.

The $2.2 million check presented to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center before Sunday?s Dolphins-Seahawks game at Sun Life Stadium was 100 percent of the funds raised by more than 2,000 cyclists that participated in the third running of the charity event on Nov. 3-4.

It was the largest single-event donation by a NFL team, according to the Dolphins.

The cycling challenge was inspired by former Dolphin Jim Mandich, who was battling bile duct cancer when the event debuted two years ago and died in April 2011. The fund-raising effort raised $533,000 in the inaugural ride, $1.07 million in 2011 and is on track to double that this year.

"The money raised by the DCC will directly help to save lives in South Florida,? said Mandich?s son Michael, CEO of the challenge. ?Having experienced the devastation that cancer can wield it is great to know that we can rely on a first class Cancer Center in our own backyard.
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center will use these funds for research in the pursuit of finding a cure and without all of the dedicated riders, sponsors and volunteers this would not be possible.?

Sylvester is recognized as one of the top cancer research institutions in the country. It is on the cutting edge in finding a cure for cancer and developing new treatments for its patients. With the donation, the more than 250 doctors and scientists at Sylvester can continue to conduct research and expand cancer treatment in South Florida.

Sylvester handles approximately 1,300 inpatient admissions, performs approximately 2,500 surgical procedures, and treats more than 4,400 new cancer patients annually with locations in Miami, Deerfield Beach, Plantation and Kendall. All Sylvester physicians are on the faculty of the Miller School of Medicine, South Florida?s only academic medical center.

?The DCC is a wonderful gift to our community,? said University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala. ?The Miami Dolphins are true champions in the fight against cancer, and we thank them for their partnership and extraordinary dedication to the people of South Florida.?

Additional sponsors of the charity event included Amgen, Breakaway from Cancer, Mack Cycle, South Florida Ford, Sun Life Financial, Publix, Alex?s Place, Giant Bicycles, Berkowitz Pollack Brant, Harcourt M & Virginia W Sylvester Foundation, Stearns Weaver, Lennar and WFOR-CBS4.

Oops: Macy's Parade Confetti Included Shredded Confidential Police Documents

A group of Tufts University students enjoying the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade last Thursday noticed something unsettling about the confetti being tossed around. Instead of being made from blank colored paper, it had bits of confidential information on it like Social Security numbers, license plate numbers, phone numbers, and addresses, made from sensitive documents from the Nassau County Police Department. Weekly Climate and Energy News Roundup | Watts Up With That?

Which Way Now for SEPP?

Get ready for the worst ? in 2013 and after:

An avalanche of economy-crippling EPA regulations, soaring energy prices, and a White House that has Climate Change as its centerpiece. President Obama acknowledged as much in his acceptance speech, when he said he wanted to ?pass on a country that isn?t threatened by the destructive power of a warming planet.? [NB: The planet hasn?t warmed for the past 16 years!]

My real concern is for young people who will never know what America was like ? or might have been. They will pay the price in reduced standard of living and job opportunities ? and, more importantly, in reduced Freedom.

We may already be on the ?slippery slope? ? with the ?takers? outvoting the ?producers.?

OECD projects that China will overtake the US as the world?s largest economy in 2016

My hope is that the US is not beyond repair. Let us pray ? each in his own way.

What we are up against

The environmental movement is arguably among the best-funded and most popular of the interest groups composing the Left today. They raise and spend billions of dollars a year, a fair amount of it coming from governments and duped donors. The five top energy and environment issues in 2013 will likely be:

? regulations on fracking and mining

? state renewable-energy portfolios (manadates)

? subsidies to renewable-energy firms, environmental advocacy groups, and other cronies

? EPA regulations on coal-powered electric generation to the point of eliminating new coal-fired power plants.

? proposals for carbon taxes ? or worse

Stopping them requires exposing their abuse of sound science (including the hot topic of global warming), abuse of courts, and their alliances with groups on the far anti-human Left.

Fortunately, other groups are actively opposing thus; it?s not necessary for SEPP to duplicate their good efforts. We already work closely with such groups and support them by providing scientific back-up.

SEPP?s past ? and proposed action plan

Although I had been involved in climate science throughout my professional life (see http://z4.invisionfree.com/Popular_Technology/index.php?showtopic=3072 ), my first policy-oriented publication was in 1988: Fact and Fancy on Greenhouse Earth (The Wall Street Journal, August 30, 1988). I founded SEPP in 1990 ? just as the UN-IPCC published its first Assessment Report on climate science; we achieved 501-c-3 tax-exempt status in 1992, shortly after the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit and the World Climate Treaty.

Among SEPP?s major achievements was the first demonstration of absence of a ?scientific consensus? (the 1995 ?Leipzig Declaration?) and the publication of booklets or other responses to the four climate-science assessments of the IPCC, culminating in setting up NIPCC (Non-governmental International Panel on Climate Change) in 2007. Since then, we have published two major NIPCC reports and two summaries. Our plan calls for another (final) report and summary in 2013.

In the case of a Romney election victory, I had planned to lay out a road map for Romney-Ryan, focusing on eliminating the current Endangerment Findings of the EPA. The EF is the basis for all carbon-dioxide regulations, whether for power plants or road vehicles. Remove the EF and most of EPA?s proposed regulations would collapse.

With Obama?s re-election, our proposed plan consists of two parts: science and environmental policy.

On science we are completing a review of the state of climate science that addresses the same audience as IPCC. ?Climate Change Reconsidered ? 2013? will be the third of this series of NIPCC reports published for us by the Heartland Institute.

Serving as an ?expert reviewer? on the forthcoming 5th Assessment report of the UN-IPCC, I can tell you without breaking confidence that the IPCC fails to make its case for AGW (anthropogenic global warming). Here is the abstract of talks I will be giving over the next couple months.

Evidence for AGW (anthropogenic global warming) is put forward in IPCC?s chapter 10 on ?Attribution.? However, NIPCC (Non-governmental International Panel on Climate Change) demonstrates that this evidence cannot survive scrutiny.

The most feared consequence of putative AGW is an accelerated rise in global Sea Level. However, a detailed analysis of available data does not support the claims of IPCC chapter 13.

We conclude therefore that all current international efforts to limit emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases are pointless, expensive, ? and largely counter-productive.

On the policy side, we work mainly with established organizations, such as the Heartland Institute and the Competitive Enterprise Institute. They are larger than we, have a talented staff of policy analysts and access to legal advice. Our contribution is to provide scientific back-up. For example, we were co-plaintiffs against the EPA, challenging their Endangerment Finding.

In 2013 we will face a large number of proposed EPA regulationsthat will do little for the environment but will certainly retard or even stop economic growth. For a (partial) listing see http://www.americanthinker.com/2012/10/obamas_epa_plans_for_2013.html

Our task is to show that most of these regulations are destructive, unscientific and unnecessary.

We invite your comments and look forward to an active and productive coming year.

SEPP pays no salaries, and does not solicit support from corporations or government agencies. It depends upon contributions from private donors.

*******************

The Race to Doha: On Monday, November 26, the 18th annual Conference of Parties (COP 18) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) opens in Doha, Qatar, for a two-week session to try to reach an agreement for the control of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions replacing the expiring Kyoto Protocol. [The setting is ironic; the opulence of Doha represents the benefits of a petroleum-based state economy.] Up to now, the prospects appear dim for a bold new treaty for international control of the economies of many nations by controlling CO2 emissions. The leaders of China, India, Brazil, and South Africa appear to be unwilling to subject their citizens to international control which would drastically increase the costs of electricity and curtail economic growth. They appear to be aware of the enormous benefits of economic growth to the citizens of their countries ? something many leaders of developed countries appear to be blissfully ignorant. As long as the evidence supporting that claim that carbon dioxide emissions are causing unprecedented and dangerous global warming remains illusionary, it is doubtful that China, India, etc will enter into international agreements limiting CO2.

The climate science as proclaimed by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is failing. According to surface temperature data published by the Hadley Center and the Climatic Research Unit (HadCRU), these has been no warming trend for sixteen years. According to satellite data published by the University of Alabama, Huntsville, there has been no atmospheric warming trend (lower troposphere) for at least a decade (depending on how one interprets the data). The climate models on which the IPCC makes dire prophecies are failing significantly, and the knowledge of the climate system proclaimed by the IPCC is blatantly inadequate. The climate establishment is becoming desperate.

Now, many international organizations have become climate soothsayers by predicting dire consequences if an agreement is not reached. They appear to be in a race on who can predict the greatest increase in temperatures in the shortest time. Dire predictions from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Metrological Organization (WMO) were expected, because they are the parent organizations of the IPCC. UNEP claims that current emissions are far greater than those consistent with an artificially contrived 2?C limit to temperature increase for pre-industrial temperatures. Of course, the industrial area began during the Little Ice Age, the coldest period since the last major ice age. UNEP states that without controls temperatures would increase by 3 to 5?C by the end of the century.

Seeing all the fun, other international organizations have joined the race. As discussed in last week?s TWTW, the International Energy Agency (IEA) had as point one in its summary of the World Energy Outlook, 2012, a prediction of 3.6?C. Journalist Peter Foster discovered the IEA rather cheated, buried in the report was the statement that the increase would take place by 2200 ? not this century as most who read the summary would assume.

Perhaps the most disturbing prediction came from the World Bank which predicted a 4?C rise by the 2060s. This is disturbing because it has long been considered that one of the missions of the World Bank was to promote economic growth in lesser-developed countries. One of the most important components of economic growth is affordable electricity and for many lesser-developed countries, the most affordable electricity comes from coal-fired power plants, which, generally, emit more CO2 than other major forms of electricity generation.

In its slick publication, Turn Down the 4? Heat, the World Bank appears to have changed its mission. No doubt, any country that desires to obtain a World Bank loan for a coal-fired power plant to provide needed electricity for its citizens will face far greater hurdles now than in the past. Please see links under Defending the Orthodoxy, Problems Within the Orthodoxy, Communicating Better to the Public ? Exaggerate, or be Vague?, and Communicating Better to the Public ? Make things up.

Please note that the word ?predictions? was used above rather than the more technically correct word ?projections.? The climate models have never been verified and validated, and projections is the correct term. However, the studies are being treated as scientific certainty, which they are not, so the term ?predictions? is used.

What about the predictions of the World Metrological Organization?

******************

Number of the Week: 30% In its November press release stating that greenhouse gas concentrations [GHG] in the atmosphere reached an all time-high in 2011 [a modern high] the World Metrological Organization (WMO) stated: ?Between 1990 and 2011 there was a 30% increase in radiative forcing ? the warming effect on our climate ? because of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other heat-trapping long-lived gases.? Further: ?Carbon dioxide is the single-most important greenhouse gas emitted by human activities. It is responsible for 85% of the increase in radiative forcing over the past decade.? [Boldface added]. The WMO failed to mention that there has been no corresponding increase in temperatures for over a decade.

Since there is no trend of increasing temperatures, while radiative forcing has increased, clearly there is something wrong with the theory and the models proclaimed by the IPCC. Please see link under Defending the Orthodoxy.

******************

Rewards and Punishments: Ross McKitrick has a slide presentation clearly demonstrating the unequal distribution of benefits and costs to the global society from international limits on CO2 emissions, provided there is not clear evidence that CO2 emissions cause unprecedented and dangerous global warming. According to McKitrick, the benefits are largely psychological, accruing to wealthy urban westerners. The costs are real costs falling on the poor, particularly in 3rd world communities with no electricity.

McKitrick gives an example of the difficulty of obtaining World Bank financing a much needed power plant in South Africa that would benefit the poor. Let us hope that the new World Bank report, discussed above, does not signal a policy change of the World Bank to deny such loans in the future. Please see link under Seeking a Common Ground.

[There is little reason to believe that the bulk of the $100 Billion in annual transfers from Western nations to 3rd world nations, as demanded by the UN, will actually benefit the poor.]

******************

Limiting Growth: Western politicians are almost falling over themselves in their efforts to limit economic growth and drive up electricity costs to their citizens. Few have taken notice of a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It states: ?On the basis of 2005 purchasing power parities (PPPs), China is projected to surpass the Euro Area in a year or so and the United States in a few more years, to become the largest economy in the world, and India is projected to surpass Japan in the next year or two and the Euro area in about 20 years.? Further: ?The United States is expected to cede its place as the world?s largest economy to China, as early as 2016. [Boldface added] India?s GDP is also expected to pass that of the United States over the long term.?

Is there any doubt why China and India do not wish to limit carbon dioxide emissions? Please see link under Economic Issues.

******************

EPA Endangerment Finding: There appears to be little doubt that the EPA will use its finding that GHG emissions (actually CO2 emissions) endanger public health and welfare. SEPP has been unable to find any scientific basis for EPA?s claim to the Federal court of 90 to 99% certainty in its findings. If any readers are aware of such a calculated certainty, please contact Ken@SEPP.org.

******************

Climate Dialogue: A new group, Climate Dialogue, has been formed to promote the exchange of ideas regarding Climate Science. Both climate experts and the general public are welcome to participate. The first issue addressed is the melting of the Arctic: ?What are the causes of the decline in Arctic sea ice? Is it dominated by global warming or can it be explained by natural variability??

The discussion questions for the first issue are:

1) What are the main processes causing the decline in Arctic sea ice?

2) How unusual is the current decline in historical perspective?

3) What is the evidence for a substantial role of ?global warming? in the current Arctic sea ice decline?

4) What is the evidence for a substantial role of natural variability (AO, AMO, NAO, PDO)?

5) What percentage of the recent decline would you attribute to anthropogenic greenhouse gases?

6) Do you think the Arctic could be ice free in the (near) future and when do you think this could happen?

The editorial staff are: 1) Rob van Dorland of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI); 2) Bart Strengers, a climate policy analyst and modeler in the IMAGE-project at the PBL, theNetherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, and 3) Marcel Crok, an investigative science writer.

The organization has promise of being an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas on all sides of the issues. Such forums are much needed and SEPP gives them best wishes. Please see link under Seeking a Common Ground.

******************

ABC: Jo Anne Nova reports that a science program broadcast by the Australian Government ? owned Australian Broadcast Corporation (ABC) equated global warming skeptics with pedophiles. Argumentum ad hominem has long been a standard tool of those criticizing skeptics and reflects that those making such attacks cannot develop logical reasons why the skeptics are wrong. Let us hope that ABC has not fully reached that level. Please see link under Communicating Better to the Public ? Make things up.

******************

WUWT-TV: Anthony Watts is uploading the videos from his 24-hour show on global warming skeptics. Since he is not well financed, the process is slow with the equipment he has. No doubt, there are many installments that TWTW readers may wish to review. Please see links under Challenging the Orthodoxy ? WUWT-TV.

******************

Secret Accounts: CEI?s Chris Horner continues to seek the secret email accounts used by public officials to conduct public business away from public scrutiny. He continues to unveil official deception and deceit regarding these accounts that should be open to the public. Please see Article # 1 and link under Cap and Trade and Carbon Taxes.

******************

Amplifications and Corrections: James Wallace correctly noted that the October 6 TWTW contained an error in tense. The corrected statement is: The US has passed Russia as the leading producer of natural gas and is projected to pass Russia as the second largest producer of oil.

Richard Lindzen amplified comments on the iris effect:

?[Ken] got the story a little wrong. In paragraph 15 of the attached, Trenberth and Fasullo explicitly indicate that what they are seeing is the iris, but then proceed to cite papers that allegedly disprove what both they and we found. Of course the papers they cite are, in fact, silly, and we did publish the responses, but our responses are never mentioned. There are other papers that have confirmed what we found, and they all go through the litany of saying that our theory has been ?disproven? or, in the environmental literature ?discredited.? Apparently, this is needed in order to publish anything supportive of the iris. I spoke about this long ago at NASA-Goddard.?

******************

Quote of the Week: One can speculate what the famous mathematician John von Neumann would have said about the climate models used by the IPCC. According to reports, the modelers are not limiting the number of parameters by using empirical research to establish values for them. Instead, they are increasing the number of parameters. Would von Neumann say something along the line: with the IPCC parameters I can make an elephant do acrobatics on a tightrope?

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which now covers only 18 per cent of global GHG emissions. Under the Protocol, 37 states ? mainly developed countries ? have agreed to legally binding emission limitation and reduction commitments. It has yet to be ratified by the US, while NZ, Canada, Japan and Russia have said they would not sign up to a second round when the commitment lapses at the end of 2012.

The average temperature for the Earth, or any region or even any specific place is very difficult to determine with any accuracy. At any given time surface air temperatures around the world range over about 100?C. Even in the same place they can vary by nearly that much seasonally and as much as 30?C or more in a day. Weather stations are relatively few and located very irregularly. Well-maintained stations with good records going back a century or more can be counted on one?s fingers. Even then only maximum and minimum temperatures or ones at a few particular times of day are usually available. Maintenance, siting, and surrounding land use also all have influences on the temperatures recorded.
